Why Aren’t You Sleeping Well?
If you’re one of the 50 million plus Americans who struggle to get enough sleep at night, you may be wondering what’s keeping you from getting a good night’s rest. As it turns out, there are a lot of factors that may be affecting your sleep patterns! Here are just a few to consider on your search for rest:
Environment
Making sure you’re comfortable in your bedroom is an important part of getting a restful sleep. If you’re too hot, too cold, exposed to too much light, or even sleeping with a disruptive bedmate, it can be really difficult to sleep through the night. Try to make your bedroom a place where you can be as relaxed as possible, limit the amount of light at night (including light from electronics!), and make sure the temperature is comfortable--experts recommend keeping it somewhere between 65 and 72 degrees fahrenheit.
Caffeine, Alcohol, or Fatty Foods
The things you consume in the evening (or even afternoon) can also play a major role in the quality and amount of sleep you get. The late night munchies can hurt you in this area; eating fatty foods or meals that are high in protein right before bed can be tough on your digestive system and make it hard to get a good night’s sleep. This could also lead to heartburn. Additionally, drinking alcohol right before you try to sleep can mess up your sleep cycle--that’s why you may notice that you have trouble getting a restful sleep after a night of heavy drinking.
Then there’s the issue of caffeine. While it’s obvious to most people that you shouldn’t down a cup of coffee right before bed, it’s important to keep in mind that caffeine has a half-life of three to five hours, meaning it will take a full six to ten hours before it’s all out of your system. So you might want to rethink that afternoon coffee if you want to get a decent amount of sleep!
Stress
Got a lot on your mind? It can be extremely difficult to unwind at night when your brain is on overdrive with worries and ruminations. In fact, stress can be a major contributor to short-term insomnia. You can try to remedy this issue by finding peace before bed with some calming exercises, writing some of your thoughts down on paper, and taking a few drops of our Sleep Tincture, which contains calming CBN.
Other Factors
These are just some of the reasons you may not be getting enough sleep. There are tons of other factors that can disrupt your sleep cycle, like exercising in the evening, an inconsistent bedtime, and a range of medical issues. You know yourself better than anyone else does, so paying attention to your own habits is a crucial part of getting to the bottom of things!
